Labour seeks to reverse 10-year decline

The Labour leadership road show is entering its third day.

For the party, it's not just about choosing a new leader but - as they've put it - a new Prime Minister.

So, of the four contenders - Grant Robertson, David Parker, Nanaia Mahuta, and Andrew Little - who will come out on top?

Labour MP Chris Hipkins didn't make the first of the hustings, stuck in Parliament arguing against the Government's plans to change employment law. He says all four would have spoken well, but he's keeping quiet on who he's backing – and won't be sticking his hand up as a running mate.

He says whoever does win will have to reverse the party's long-running decline.

"If you go back even 10 years, probably since about 2004, the Labour Party has been trending down in opinion polls… we briefly rallied in 2005 enough to win the election, but that trend has been quite a long-term one."

National MP Jami-Lee Ross says Labour's still a divided party, and National is getting on with governing the country.
