A big fire in a rural area near Invercargill has broken out with three helicopters battling the blaze.
The fire is near Tiwai Point, in a rural area, and is about 1sqkm in size. It is burning through manuka scrub, Southern Rural Fire spokesperson Sally Chesterfield says.
Six fire crews are at the fire which started shortly before 2:30pm today.
