The town of Levin has laid claim to a big Guinness World Record for the largest licorice allsort.

The record was set by Levin-based company RJ's Licorice at their factory on Friday, to celebrate their 21st birthday.

Around 5000 people were there to celebrate and help eat the 1.1 tonne allsort, approximately 800mm square.

RJ's Licorice sales manager Amy Law said about half of the allsort was eaten at the event, and it was "an absolutely amazing community day" in Levin.

In accordance with Guinness Book of World Records rules, which specified that the entire product be used, the remaining allsort will be donated to The Salvation Army to share around their community.

There was a unanimous decision at the factory to choose green for the allsort's colour, and they had three practice runs before the record setting day.

The ratios were the same as a standard licorice allsort, and the giant sweet included around 75kg sugar, 624kg of icing sugar/cornflour, 27kg of desiccated coconut and 156 litres of glucose syrup.
