Former Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard will tonight shed light on her experiences in Australia's top office, when she speaks at the University of Auckland.

Ms Gillard, who in September released her memoirs, entitled My Story, is speaking as part of the Auckland Writers Festival.

She will be joined onstage by lawyer and former political journalist Linda Clark.

Ms Gillard came to power as Prime Minister in 2010 after ousting Kevin Rudd as leader of the Labor Party. She led the country until 2013, when she was sacked by her party and Mr Rudd took the helm once again. The Welsh-born politician was the first female to lead Australia.

The six-year Labor Party government ended in September 2013, when a Tony Abbott-led Liberal-National Coalition took power.

My Story covers, among other things, Ms Gillard's ascent to the prime ministership, her time in office, her on-going battle with Mr Rudd for party leadership and how she sees her legacy.

Tonight Ms Gillard is expected to discuss her time in office, her achievements, her mistakes and what it's like to be a woman at the highest levels of political and public life.

"Julia Gillard in Conversation" will take place in the university's Owen Glenn Building from 6:00pm-7:15pm.

The event has sold out but is being live streamed.
