Video: Explosives used to bring down radio mast

A Radio New Zealand mast in Wellington will be brought down this morning in a controlled detonation.

The detonation of the 220-metre mast at Titahi Bay is being livestreamed, but took seconds to come down.

The structure was the second tallest structure in New Zealand next to the Sky Tower.

RNZ had been planning to take the mast down, but an engineer's report on the structure a few months ago found corrosion issues and "rushed things along a bit", head of technology Matthew Finn says.

The mast hasn't been used for a number of months.

The remaining 137m-tall mast on the same site at Whitireia Regional Park still carries the services from the other structures.

No disruption to normal broadcast services is expected.
