A sleep expert says education's the key to tackling an epidemic of tiredness among our teenagers.

New research shows more than two-thirds of Australian teens are suffering from sleep-deprivation.

However Dr Alex Bartle says New Zealand's no different, and it's crucial to switch off digital devices at least an hour before bed.

"They don't actually have insomnia, they sleep perfectly well. It's just that they want to sleep between three and four in the morning and say midday - and consequently they miss lectures, they lose jobs."

Dr Bartle says physical exercise is a healthier alternative to caffeine.
