While they might not have been the big winners, last night's Lotto punters can walk away happy they raised more than $2.7 million to help out Kaikoura and Hurunui after last month's earthquake.

"All profits from last night's draw are going to help the people of Kaikoura," said Lotto NZ's Chief Executive Wayne Pickup.

"Caring about our communities and each other is part of the Kiwi way of life and it was heart-warming to see Lotto players really embrace this special draw to help the people of Kaikoura."

The profits from last night's draw have been transferred to the NZ Lottery Grants Board, which will administer the distribution of funding across the area.

The draw was especially exciting for one lucky Powerball winner, who walked away with a cool $10 million.

The winning ticket was sold to a player in Auckland, and is made up of $10 million from Powerball and $166,667 from first division.

This is the third Powerball to be struck in recent weeks, following on from wins in November by a player from Whangarei, who won $5.5 million, and a young couple from the Hibiscus Coast in Auckland, who won $44 million - the largest Lotto prize ever won in New Zealand.
