The family of slain rising league star Luke Tipene says they'll continue the fight to keep his killer in prison.
His killer, Vincent Skeen, became eligible for parole this month, only six weeks into his five-year, two-month sentence.
Luke's uncle, Sean Wilson, says justice hasn't really been served.
"The systems are there to protect and follow through for the victims. I don't think the victims - speaking of ourselves in this particular case - really had justice served."
Skeen, 18, has been in custody since 2014, but Mr Wilson says being eligible for parole only six weeks after sentencing was hardly fair on the family.
"The message is you can go out and commit crime, you can murder someone, you can kill them and literally within four weeks you're up for parole."
Skeen was denied parole this time, to the family's relief, but will be eligible again in June next year.
"We're there for justice for Luke... I'm sure as a family we'll come together and try and fight it again," Mr Wilson says.
The parole board says Skeen still needs to attend drug and alcohol programmes and complete a psychological assessment.
Luke was 17 when he died after a fight at a Grey Lynn party in November 2014.
The prosecution had argued for at least eight years' prison.
