Novopay faces legal action
The Ministry of Education says it’s taking legal action against the developers of the Novopay payroll system, after thousands of errors in the $30 million system left teachers out of pocket. The ministry’s chief executive Lesley Longstone says it plans to use the money gained from legal action to help schools with the new system.
Northland men in court on sex abuse charges
Kaitaia businessman Daniel Taylor collapsed in court this morning as he heard five new charges against him. Taylor was taken from the courtroom but remained in custody as he received medical attention. He is facing 17 other charges involving four boys.
Former teacher James Parker is the other man appearing in court today on charges of sexual abuse. Parker, who taught at Kaitaia’s Pamapuria School, is facing additional charges to the 49 he’s already admitted to.
Israel opens ‘gates of hell’ in Gaza
Hamas says Israel has opened the ‘gates of hell’ by killing the commander of its military wing in Gaza. Ahmed Jabari is the most senior Hamas official to be killed since Israel invaded Gaza four years ago. The killing signalled a dramatic resumption of Israel’s policy of assassinating Palestinian militant leaders, and followed a string of airtrikes from both sides.
Abortion debate flares in Ireland after woman’s death
Emotions are running high in Ireland after the death of 31-year-old Savita Halappanar, who was refused an abortion in the midst of a miscarriage and subsequently died from blood poisoning. Ireland’s constitution officially bans abortion, and a 1992 Supreme Court ruling legalising the procedure for situations where the woman’s life is at risk is not always followed.
Adam Thomson escapes with one week ban
All Black flanker Adam Thomson has only been suspended for one week for an alleged ‘stomp’ on Alasdair Strokosch’s head in the weekend’s match against Scotland. The IRB ruled that Thomson’s action showed no malicious intent. The ban rules him out of the upcoming test against Italy, although it’s likely he was going to be benched or rested anyway.
On the back of Sonny Bill Williams’ jump back to league, Benji Marshall’s manager is now seeking an immediate release from the Wests Tigers star’s contract so he can play union in Japan.
Odd bite: Bieber wants Selina back
Does he love her, or love her not? According to the New York Daily News, Justin Bieber has been texting and calling Selena Gomez in an attempt to win her back. The young stars haven’t even confirmed their split but the tabloids are nonetheless running riot with stories of Gomez relishing in a girly night out without the Bieb.
