Motorists driving between Wellington and Kāpiti are being asked to drive with extreme caution following a diesel spill.

The spill happened near the Whenua Tapu Cemetary on State Highway 1 however all those driving between the capital and the coast are being asked to reduce their speeds.

Delays are also likely in the area following a number of crashes however the roads have now been re-opened.

A car and a truck collided just north of the Paekakariki railway crossing closing the northbound lane shortly after 6pm.

The road has since been re-opened however traffic is still heavy.

There has also been a four car pile-up in Pukerua Bay. One person was taken by helicopter to hospital with serious injuries while another four people were hospitalised with moderate injuries.
