Drivers should expect significant delays following a two-vehicle crash on State Highway 1 near Paekakariki.
The crash happened around midday and has temporarily closed the road near Fisherman's Table, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.
Emergency services are on site and Police have temporary traffic management in place.
Motorists are advised to delay travel if possible as it may take some time clear the backlog of traffic.
Southbound traffic is being diverted over Paekakariki Hill Road, but this route is not suitable for heavy vehicles.
