Waitemata police are searching for a man caught on camera appearing to pickpocket elderly people.

An elderly man was reading at the New Lynn library in west Auckland in early July, when a witness photographed a man in a blue top appearing to steal a phone from the victim's pocket.

Forty minutes later, the same offender was captured on security footage going into the Henderson TAB and apparently stealing another elderly man's wallet from his pocket.

"We want to know who this bloke is and if he sees this, I would suggest he get in touch with us as soon as possible," says Senior Constable Kevin Morgan.

"The person who took the photo in the library and gave it to us has done well to act so quickly and we're very grateful for their help."

Anyone who recognises the man is asked to call Snr Cst Morgan at the New Lynn police station on (09) 839 0600, or privately message the Waitemata police's Facebook page.

Information can also be given anonymously to the organisation Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
