A police investigation has resulted in the arrest of a 23-year-old Hutt Valley man who allegedly robbed a bank in a Wellington suburb last month.

Police say the man robbed the Jackson St branch of Westpac in Petone on June 30, before making off in a stolen car that he later dumped.

However the man was only arrested and charged on Friday after "extensive police work" that relied heavily on information received from the public.

Detective Senior Sergeant Glenn Barnett said police are "very pleased with the result".

"[We] would like to thank the Hutt Valley public for information provided during the course of the investigation," he said.

The alleged offender will appear in the Hutt Valley District Court on Thursday, August 4.

He faces charges of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, aggravated robbery and driving while disqualified.
