Police have released the ages of the pair involved in a fatal pursuit in Porirua at the weekend as they continue their investigations.

A 21-year-old woman from the Wellington region, a passenger in the car, died when the 42-year-old driver from Horowhenua fled from police on Saturday night.

Both were taken to hospital where the woman later died of her injuries, while the driver was in a serious, but not life-threatening condition.

He was released into police custody this morning and will appear in the Wellington District Court on unrelated charges and also failing to stop.

Police say their investigation is still continuing and won't comment further.

They're still working to tell the woman's next of kin of her death, some of whom are overseas.

Yesterday police said the car was signalled to pull over for a routine stop when the driver decided to speed off.

The pursuit lasted less than two minutes before the vehicle lost control on a right-hand bend and crashed through a fence.

The Independent Police Conduct Authority is also investigating.
