A Hastings man on his way to help stranded tourists became stranded himself after his bicycle crashed on Taihape-Napier Rd.

The man, in his 30s, was treated and stabilised by paramedics, before being airlifted to Hastings Hospital yesterday afternoon by the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter.

The man was found by two German tourists who spotted him after the accident.

The rider was understood to be returning to Taihape to get a tow truck for some tourists who had become stranded when their car broke down.
