Man in court over Christchurch bakery robberies

A man appeared in the Christchurch Youth Court on Monday over two aggravated robberies at Christchurch's Buns Bakery.

Staff at the 24-hour bakery were on edge after being robbed in the middle of the night for the third time in six weeks.

Thieves stormed Buns Bakery on Ferry Road just after 2:30am on August 9.

"Three guys come in the front, one with a gun, one with a baseball [bat] and one with a hammer. They just pointed the gun on me and for safety we just moved ourselves to the back and hid ourselves," said Qush Waehwa.

The man with the rifle yelled at staff to get down. Mr Waehwa says they were yelling, "Where's the money? We want the money."

The man with the hammer crossed the counter and attempted to open the till, then stole cigarettes. All three then ran from the store.

"I am saying that it was very lucky otherwise anything can happen, because just one trigger - everything is finished."

No one was injured, but staff were shaken by the incident.

It's the third since June that the bakery has been a target.

"It was frightening, because in the one month it was the second time they are doing it and both times I was here," said Mr Waehwa, who feels unsafe working overnight.
