Man jailed for killing baby daughter

An Upper Hutt man who killed his 11-month-old daughter in 2009 has been jailed for three years and 10 months.

Tawera Wichman pleaded guilty to Teegan Tairoa-Wichman's manslaughter last month.

The 24-year-old left court to calls of "love you son" as he was led out.

He was 17 when he shook his daughter after getting frustrated that she wouldn't drink from her bottle.

Justice France told the court Teegan was a premature baby, and she had been difficult for two young parents to look after.

Teegan was born 15 weeks premature, and was in hospital for the first three months of her life. A few months after going home she was hospitalised again. She stayed in Hutt Hospital between May and September 2009, when she died.

Wichman was not arrested until 2013.

His imprisonment comes the same day an eight-year jail sentence was handed down to Michael Te Kouarehu Kereopa, who fatally bashed a six-month-old girl last year.
