Man naming and shaming brothel clients

A Christchurch City Council candidate is targeting clients of an illegal brothel in his neighbourhood by posting their details on Facebook.

Wayne Hawker has recorded the number plates of cars used to visit the prostitutes in an effort to rid the sex parlour from his street. The house in question is at 10A England St.

"The fact is we have an illegal brothel operating in a residential community," says Mr Hawker.

It's a brand new brick house up a long driveway, tucked into a back section.

"[From] what I have seen they are all young Asian ladies that are working in there," says Mr Hawker.

He has logged vehicle registrations of drivers who visit the prostitutes and posted them on Facebook. Mr Hawker says businessmen can be seen parking their cars in the day and wandering into the house.

Neighbours are just learning of the brothel's existence.

"I only just found out about it through listening to the news and hearing it on TV, but it is not the best idea," says one neighbour.

Local resident Ali Robertson and her two children walked right past it.

"At least it is not another drug house around here and at least if I didn't even know it was there - it is not causing me an issue," says Ms Robertson.

But operating a brothel in a residential area is illegal. The city council is investigating and asks residents to be patient.

Meanwhile, Mr Hawker is refusing to give up his plate-recording crusade.
