A man is in a stable condition in hospital after being shot in the head with a crossbow in south Wairarapa on Sunday morning.

Police say the bolt penetrated the 23-year-old's skull when he was shot after a confrontation at Kahutara, near Lake Ferry.

Two 18-year-olds were with him at the time.

A 21-year-old man has been arrested and charged with assault in relation to the incident and police aren't looking for anyone else.

Police say all four men were known to each other and the assault isn't gang-related.

"I am very comfortable that we have spoken to all of the primary witnesses and that there is no risk to the public now or in the future from this group," says Detective Senior Sergeant Bysouth.
