A 56-year-old man has been arrested and charged after a stabbing at Auckland City Hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

The victim remains in hospital with serious injuries.

The incident happened shortly before 3pm at the site in the central Auckland suburb of Grafton.

The man has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He will appear in the Auckland District Court on Thursday.

It is not yet known how the two knew each other, or if either of them was a patient.

Despite reports from other media, police say the hospital was not in lockdown.

Nikita O'Brien witnessed the aftermath of the incident and described it as "super scary", saying there was "so much blood" on the hospital's fifth floor.

Mrs O'Brien, who works at Auckland Hospital as a catering associate, said she saw a group of people running towards her as she made her way to the cafeteria.

As that's where she was heading for her break, she continued making her way there before being confronted by the scene.

"I saw quite a lot of blood on the floor and a lady stopping us going anywhere near that area, but I managed to get into the cafeteria," she said.

"I saw a few towels covering some spots, and I was told that there was blood under there too."

Mrs O'Brien said a number of people had told her that there was a big fight and there was a man holding his lower back, saying he had been stabbed.

She said she was "shocked" to witness what she did.

"It all happened pretty fast - as soon as I walked out all the police were in there and it was all blocked off."
