Manawatu Gorge to open today
The latest attempt to get traffic through the Manawatu Gorge again will begin this afternoon.
The road between Woodville and Palmerston North will partially open from 5pm today, though not all traffic can use it.
It comes a year after the road was closed by a series of slips which dumped 30,000 cubic metres of rock and dirt on the highway.
It partially reopened on May 31 but was closed again in early July after a new slip.
Today's reopening will see the road open to all traffic heading from Woodville 24 hours a day, and open to drivers travelling in both directions from 6pm to 8am.
At all other times, drivers heading from the Palmerston North side will have to use alternative routes.
"It's not a complete solution quite yet, and we're keeping celebrations on ice until we've got the road fully reopened," New Zealand Transport Agency Palmerston North state highways manager David McGonigal says.
"However, it will enable about two thirds of vehicles using the alternative routes to return to the gorge, which will make a real difference to people's journeys."
