Police are hoping to identify the body of a man found in a house which caught fire in Christchurch on Wednesday morning.

A post-mortem has been completed after the body was discovered in a self-contained flat on Rutherford Street, in the suburb of Woolston, but police say further forensic examination is required to establish his identity.

The fire started at 6am and completely engulfed the property. It took four crews to bring the fire under control.

Investigators were still at the property today and hope to have more answers on Saturday.

Anyone who witnessed the fire or who has any information or images is asked to contact Christchurch Central Police Station on 03 363 7400 or anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111, or online.
