Police are looking for two women who have been seen on CCTV footage driving a car away from an Auckland gym after allegedly stealing the keys from a member's cubbyhole as the owner worked out.

The incident happened at the Anytime Fitness Manuaku gym.

CCTV footage shows one woman entering into the gym and walking out with something – possibly the keys – in her hand, which she then puts in her pocket.

The pair then approach a silver Toyota Vista parked directly outside the gym, and drive off.

The owner of the vehicle, Daniel Fa'amoe, told the New Zealand Herald he could not believe how audacious the pair had been.

"I was at the gym at around 2:30 pm doing my workout and I finished maybe just over an hour later.

"I was looking for my car keys inside the cubbyhole, thinking maybe someone took them by mistake. But when I looked at the spot where I parked, the car wasn't there. And that's when I knew. I freaked out," he told the paper.

The 25-year-old asked gym staff to check security footage.

Mr Fa'amoe has put the CCTV footage, with the permission of his gym, on Facebook which has now been viewed more than 55,000 times and had over 800 shares.

Counties Manukau police say they are investigating the incident.

"People need to be extra vigilant right now - as thieves tend to be out in force during the holiday period, "Detective Senior Sergeant Ross Ellwood told the Herald.

"With modern cars, it was easy for an offender to grab a set of keys and wander through a car park until a vehicle was unlocked at the click of a button.

"Once they have access to your car, if you've got any documentation in your car identifying your address, they then have access to your home address, which makes burglary very easy."
