A search for the person who shot and killed a man in Manurewa on Saturday morning has been narrowed down to just one man - 23-year-old Bodi McKee.

Police were called to an address on Winsford St around 7:15am on Saturday after receiving reports that a brief altercation between two men had got out of hand, with one of them shot in the stomach.

Despite ambulance staff treating the 32-year-old man for his wound, he died just before 8:30am.

McKee, who is believed to have fled the scene in a vehicle after the attack, is described as Maori, of medium build and 183cm in height. He also has tattoos on his left forearm and shoulder.

Police have warned people not to approach him, as they believe he is in possession of a firearm.

Detective Inspector Gary Lendrum told media they began their search for McKee after speaking with those at the home where the man died.

"Bodi and the deceased are known to each other, and shortly after the incident, McKee apologised to the occupants of the address and then left," he said.

Detective Insp Lendrum said police are now trying to work out why the two met on Saturday morning, and says they are unsure whether the incident was gang- or drug-related.

He would not reveal the identity of the deceased.

Police are calling on members of the public to call 111 immediately if they see McKee or know of his whereabouts.
