A former Maori Party candidate for a seat in parliament is denying a charge of manslaughter after a man died allegedly trying to break into Salvation Army premises.

Timothy Aperahama Morrison, 45, pleaded not guilty to manslaughter when he appeared for a callover at the High Court in Auckland on Wednesday.

The charge arose after Rob Harris, 46, died while trying to break into a Salvation Army rehabilitation centre in Mt Eden, Auckland where Morrison was working in September last year.

Morrison, who was ranked 15th on the Maori Party list in 2011, was granted bail and will go on trial on August 5.
