KiwiRail is slamming the "appalling" actions of a group of masked people who stopped a Wellington train and vandalised it.

At 1pm yesterday a group of passengers on a Tranz Metro train on the Johnsonville line near Wellington sprayed graffiti on the outside of the train, before running away.

"KiwiRail is appalled by this act of wilful vandalism of public property and by the upset caused to our passengers and staff," a spokesperson for KiwiRail said.

KiwiRail is assisting police and is looking at CCTV footage.

The graffiti cost around $6000 to remove.

Police are investigating the vandalism and is calling for anyone who witnessed any suspicious activity around the Awarua Train Station yesterday to come forward.

It's understood the vandals filmed themselves tagging the train.

There are numerous videos on YouTube and Twitter of people carrying out similar acts of vandalism around the world. The trend is sometimes known as "spraycations", where groups of people on holiday grafitti trains and other public property.
