Massive Henderson plastics factory fire 'not suspicious'

Police say they are no longer treating a massive blaze at a west Auckland plastics factory on Tuesday night as suspicious.

A scene examination suggested the fire at Total Plastics in Henderson was not arson, which police say supports the conclusion they came to after looking at CCTV footage and other evidence.

They've now established the fire was caused by an electrical fault, and confirmed there were "no suspicious circumstances".

The blaze effectively destroyed the Aetna Pl property at around 9pm on Tuesday night, despite the efforts of 26 fire crews and four aerial units.

Henderson senior station officer Chris Delphic says the business was ill-prepared.

"This building didn't have a sprinkler system in it...and those are always helpful for us to get in early when the fire is at its early stages."

Fallen power cables, explosive debris, water run-off, dense smoke and unknown chemicals were just some of the extra hazards firefighters had to deal with.
