A Christchurch mechanic who issued fake warrants of fitness (WOF) has been sentenced to four months of home detention and 150 hours of community work.
Jeremy Burrell, 28, had admitted a charge of dishonestly using a document for financial gain.
Burrell is an elite cyclist and the home detention sentence will restrict his training.
He issued 18 fake warrants from his home, and made less than $500 from the scheme.
He stole WOF stickers from his employer, Miles Toyota, and updated the official NZTA listing online.
Burrell has said previously that he was just a small part of a widespread industry problem.
A defence lawyer claimed he was remorseful, and had inspected all of the cars he warranted.
