An anti-domestic violence campaigner says the Mei Fan murder is a classic case of the partner wanting the final say in the relationship.

Sixty-year-old Michael Preston murdered his estranged wife two years ago in her Wellington home, to secure custody of their two children.

But executive director of SHINE, Jane Drumm says the brutal killing had nothing to do with the children, and everything to do with control.

"These thoughts were about punishing, it was basically 'if I can't have you - no one can'"

Preston has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum non-parole period of 19 years.
