Men allegedly stole 65 beehives

Two Whanganui men have been arrested after they were allegedly found with 65 stolen beehives.

The 20 year olds were caught when the owners of the hives tipped off police.

The hives were recovered at a property in Turakina, south east of Whanganui City.

There have been increasing numbers of thefts in the area, and police want the public to watch out for hives being transported at unusual times.

Detective Karl Reyland says beekeepers usually shift hives just before dawn and after dusk using small utes.

"We urge members of the public to report suspicious vehicles carrying beehives.

"If you are unable to phone police at the time, take a note of the type of vehicle, registration number, location and direction of travel.

"If possible note the description of the beehives including colour and numbers and then call police when you can," says Mr Reyland.
