The existence of two divers reportedly swept out of Bluff harbour into Foveaux Strait is being questioned.
Southern police, Coastguard, commercial fishing vessels and a helicopter have scoured the area since a member of the public made the report around 1pm on Friday.
A police spokesperson told Newshub they're continuing to monitor the situation, but are not actively searching.
No one has been reported missing or overdue.
Police are asking anyone who has been diving, or know family or friends diving in the area today, to contact Southland police on 03 211 0400.
