Mobsters jailed for bashing former gang president

Notorious Mongrel Mob gangsters barked and screamed gang salutes as they were jailed for more than 13 years for bashing a gang captain who had handed in his patch.

Kyle Livesy, 29, Tamati Hetariki, 35, and Clinton Simon, 31, travelled from Timaru to a Christchurch home, attacking the former mobster and his two teenage sons in the driveway.

The ordeal which followed saw the back of tomahawk, fence paling and baton used as weapons.

The victim was left with serious injuries including cuts to the back of his head from the axe, a fractured eye socket, gash to his arm and leg injuries.

The two teenagers escaped with bruising and minor cuts and did not require medical attention.

A Harley motorcycle and car parked in the driveway were also damaged, the bike extensively.

The victim has since died of a heart attack, but there is no evidence linking the death to the assault.

The trio were found guilty of 13 charges at trial in September, including wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, causing intentional damage and assault with a weapon.

Two other charges were admitted prior to trial with the men claiming they were acting in self-defence after checking in at the house.

Judge Alistair Garland rejected the suggestion at a sentencing hearing in the Christchurch District Court this afternoon, describing the violence as extreme and "clearly premeditated".

It was "just a matter of luck" the attack did not end with a death, the court heard.

Hetariki was jailed for 13-and-a-half years, while Livesey received a sentence of 13 years and nine months and Simon a term of 13 years and three months.

Minimum jail time of six years was also imposed to prevent an early release on parole.
