More hunters expected with Easter season start

Hunters are being reminded that making no meat is better than no mate, as the deer season gets underway this long weekend.

Mountain Safety Council chief executive Mike Daisely says the number of hunting deaths is still too high.

"Since 2007, a number of hunters have got into incidents -- all of them essentially could have been avoided if people had followed… the rules."

Mr Daisley says hunters need to make sure they aren't accidentally shooting their mates and that they are handling firearms safely.

"Wev'e got Easter and the Roar kicking off at the same time, which typically means we're going to get a lot more hunters out at quite an exciting and quite a tense time of the year."

He says making it home alive is the primary objective.
