More rain expected in far North

Heavy rain has lashed the top half of the North Island today and the rain and gales are expected to make their way further down the country tonight.

The downpours forced schools to close north of Auckland, and caused flooding in eastern and northern suburbs as well as delaying some flights.

Federated Farmers Northland dairy chair Ashley Cullen says today has been tough work.

“Conditions this morning were horrid and they weren’t very nice, especially dealing with cows and calves,” he says. “We’re at 40mm of rain in the space of probably three hours and a lot of the drains just couldn’t cope."

It may not be the last the far North sees of the rain, with heavy downpours forecast for the next few days, as well as thunder and lightning.
