The name of man who died during a motocross event in Leamington, Cambridge yesterday has been identified.

Bruce Honore, 68, was from Ngahinapouri. He was a spectator at the event.

Another man and woman were treated for minor injuries at Waikato Hospital.

Cambridge Motocross released a statement on Facebook saying they "suffered a freak tragedy at our event".

Motorcycling New Zealand, which has 54 clubs, is in the dark over how one spectator was killed and two others injured.

The news came through as the organisation was celebrating 100 years of the sport.

"Very sad in the afternoon to have this news filtering through of this tragic incident," says president Glen Williams.

"We have policy in place, but obviously accidents can occur, so we all are very interested in hearing the outcome.

"Our thoughts do go to everybody involved in this incident."

Police have launched a serious crash investigation. Worksafe NZ has been advised of the incident.
