Motorcyclist killed in crash near Oamaru

An investigation into the death of a motorcyclist in a horrific crash in Waianakarua, near Herbert will continue today.

Police can now confirm that the 39 year-old man who died was Craig Alan Chambers, from Motueka.

Police say a Toyota car with two foreign passengers crossed the double yellow lines on State Highway 1 last night, overtaking vehicles travelling south and collided with oncoming traffic.

The 31-year-old female passenger in the Toyota had to be cut from the car and was airlifted to Dunedin hospital. The 29-year-old male driver was taken to hospital by ambulance. Their conditions are currently unknown.

The motorcyclist was returning from the Burt Munro challenge in Southland and died at the scene. He is the fourth motorcyclist killed in a crash over the weekend.

Two women, aged 50 and 20, in a New Zealand Rural Post car suffered minor injuries.

A third vehicle was also involved with the passengers, aged 56 and 44, escaping with minor injuries as well.

SH1 is down to one lane under stop and go direction. Scene examinations are taking place and police enquiries are ongoing.
