Land Information Minister Louise Upston will decide whether two controversial north Canterbury locations should have their names changed, with a third being opened for public consultation.

The New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) has asked Ms Upston to decide the fate of 'N***erhead' and 'N***er Hill', and whether they should return to the official names of 'Tawhai Hill' and 'Kanuka Hills'.

According to NZGB, initial submissions had Kanuka Hills with 83 votes supporting it and 30 against and Tawhai Hill had 79 in support and 31 against.

The third proposal was 'Steelhead Stream' which gained 76 submissions of support and 37 against. Although,  because the type of trout living in it are not sea-running 'Steelhead'  -- the name is therefore not applicable and alternative names will be voted upon by the public in late May.
