Name suppression granted for cat shooter

The teenager who shot a Wainuiomata cat through the head with a crossbow bolt has been granted diversion.

Four-year-old Moomoo was discovered in October last year by his owner, Donna Ferrari, with an arrow lodged through his skull above his left eye. Luckily for Moomoo, the bolt only grazed his skull, crucially missing brain tissue.

An 18-year-old Wainuiomata man was charged with ill-treating an animal, under the Animal Welfare Act.

The man was sentenced at the Hutt Valley District Court today after completing court-ordered tasks, APNZ reported. He also received permanent name suppression for his own protection, after he and his family received threats over the internet.

At an earlier court appearance, police had said they supported diversion for the accused.
