An Auckland woman is outraged waiters at a Henderson Nando's outlet asked her to get rid of a packet of sushi she'd brought in for her five-year-old son.

The anonymous woman told the New Zealand Herald she picked up the 'snack-size' packet of sushi to keep their boy busy ahead of the meal, but were approached by a waiter while waiting in line.

"The man came up to us and said what our child was doing was not allowed because otherwise if other people see it then they will think that it's normal, and we were like, 'We're ordering anyway', and he said, 'Okay, a one-off,' but they won't allow it again," she said.

Restaurant manager Avin Jit told the paper they are cracking down on people bringing in extra food after an expensive upgrade.

"It was quite busy and we just can't allow that stuff, because all of a sudden at busy times we'll start seeing McDonald's wrappers or Burger King wrappers, and we'll be like, 'What's going on here? We're Nando's'," he said.

"I know where they're coming from. If it was my child I might be annoyed too, but it's a policy."

The family cancelled their order and walked out of the restaurant and say they won't be going back.

The Hospitality Association says most businesses would not expect people to bring their own food.
