Napier father and son fight off masked dairy robbers

A father and son have fought back against an attempted robbery at a Napier dairy, with the incident caught on camera.

CCTV footage shows Manmohan and Sukhjinder Pal Singh take on the masked robbers with a hockey stick and a table leg at the Te Awa Dairy on Friday at 5:41am.

Manmohan, a 61-year-old farmer, struck the first blow with a table leg as the offender approached the counter, Hawke's Bay Today reports.

The hit missed and the robber responded by jumping the counter and attacking with a hammer.

Son Sukhjinder Pal held off the second offender using a hockey stick and occasionally landing a blow on the hammer-wielding robber.

The counter was knocked over, blocking the exit as the pair tried to escape. The first offender was then hit by his own crowbar, which was taken by Manmohan.

The masked pair eventually managed to escape, but not before a newspaper display was hurled at them.

"That is the first time that has happened," said Manmohan. "That is not a robbery; that is an attack. That is not good. Normally they just run away."
