The National Library has begun recording the trauma and recovery of the two Canterbury earthquakes.

It is collecting details of the events through a variety of mediums, including photos and material from memorial services.

The Minister responsible for the National Library, Nathan Guy, says it is important that people's thoughts and memories are documented.

“We can look back in time and think ‘gosh, this was really horrific, how did we cope, how did we rebuild the city of Christchurch? How did we support the people of Canterbury?’”

Guy says it is important that the data is captured and made accessible to future generations.

Anyone with footage or photographs they would like to submit should contact the National Library.
