National: Message received in Northland result

Winston Peters has returned to work after his Northland by-election victory over the weekend.

But it's still not clear whether he will resign his list position to get another New Zealand first MP into Parliament.

National MP Jami-Lee Ross says the National Party has "received a message" and will work hard to win back the hearts and minds of voters in the electorate.

"Ultimately we're about governing the whole country and working for all New Zealanders, and we've still got a very strong programme of ensuring that we build a better Government for families in New Zealand and for the rest of the country."

Without saying it outright, Labour urged its supporters to vote for Mr Peters – but that doesn't mean they'll necessarily play nice again in 2017.

"Right now, we're just pleased that now we've got John Key and the National Government having to work very hard to get their agenda through now," says Labour MP Jacinda Ardern.

So how much more difficult will it be for the Government to push through new laws and reforms?
