The Royal New Zealand Navy has kicked off its 75th anniversary festivities with an event for veterans and family at Auckland’s Devonport Naval Base today.

More than 500 people are expected to attend the celebrations, in which four ships will be open to both honour the veterans and showcase New Zealand’s modern Navy.

Public events will also be scattered across the year at locations throughout New Zealand, starting with a vessel formation entry and gun salute into Auckland’s Waitemata Harbour early next month.

“During the year Navy ships will visit as many ports as possible throughout the country, allowing people to visit and be part of the celebrations," Chief of Navy, Rear Admiral John Martin said.

The celebrations also mark the 30th anniversary of women first being posted to sea.
