Striking workers at a South Korean shipyard are being described as a big threat to the delivery of our Navy's new ship.

Hyundai Heavy Industries has won the $500 million contract for the tanker, but its workers are threatening to strike and Labour's Phil Goff says New Zealand has a lot on the line.

"We're paying the same for this one ship, this one tanker, as we got the entire seven-ship fleet of Project Protector over the last decade."

The world's biggest shipbuilder is facing its third consecutive year of labour strikes.

The new tanker will replace the 30-year-old Endeavour, and should be on the water by 2020.
