A kitten in Nelson has used up one of its lives after getting its head stuck in a dish-drawer.

The unfortunate animal was investigating the dishes at a Kitten Inn foster family home when the calamity happened.

"Hubby opened dish drawer and one of the kittens got up underneath and managed to get her head jammed in between the plastic of the drawer inner and the metal of the outside - meaning she couldn't move forward or back without seemingly getting crushed or strangled," the fosterer said on Facebook.

"If I can paint the picture - kitten screaming, other kittens crying in response, me on the floor desperately trying to work out what happened and how best to assist. Us desperately looking for ways to dismantle said drawer or even break it to get her out."

It was no use. The kitten was trapped - and time was running out. The kitten started going into shock, while the foster family frantically thought about who to call. The electrician? Fisher & Paykel?

The situation was dire, and needed an emergency response.

"I demand the phone and call 111 and 3 lovely firemen came around and they got on their knees and did some magical fireman thing and out she popped. A little dazed but otherwise unhurt," they say.

"Turns out one of the firemen is in the market for 2 kittens boy and girl and had not heard of Kitten Inn so I filled him in and gave him the email and he's gonna pop up to adopt some."

And they have a message for other feline owners: "Lessons - beware of kittens near dish drawers and Firemen are AWESOME!!"
