A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Dunedin after failing to stop for police multiple times on Friday.

Police pursued him after he sped through Palmerston, but had to abandon the chase as it was "too dangerous" for them to continue.

Police in Nelson and Christchurch also attempted to stop him earlier on Friday, but police were unable to confirm if they chased him after these incidents.

The man was located on foot in Waikouaiti after ditching his blue Subaru.

He faces charges of driving while disqualified, failing to stop for police and other driving-related charges.
