New synthetic weed causing problems in Auckland

Up to 30 people have been treated for adverse effects after ingesting a new synthetic drug in Auckland.

The cannabis compound has been linked to two deaths in Germany, and is commonly sold to people who think it's a legal smoking product.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne says it was brought to the attention of Environmental Science and Research after a weekend surge in hospitalisations.

"They're not of a serious nature yet, but have been recorded overseas, in which case we would potentially be looking at fatal situations."

Mr Dunne says there are no approved psychoactive products, and selling, distributing or possessing them is illegal.
