New tracking systems to deter fish dumping

Three fishing companies have put tracking systems into boats to prove they're not responsible for dumping fish.

Seventy boats belonging to Sanford, Leigh and Aotearoa Fisheries are being fitted with the vessel monitoring system to show where they are at any time.

It's about transparency, but it will also help management at the Ministry for Primary Industries.

The vessel monitoring systems are being installed on all the commercial boats fishing for snapper on the east of the upper North Island.

The tracking data will be sent to a server and used to manage fish stocks, giving the potential to fine-tune the quota management system.

Another plus is if boats get into trouble, owners will know where they are and consumers will also benefit from that traceability.
