Researchers at Otago University have developed a high-tech liquid which could mean fewer trips to the dentist.

Staff from the university's chemistry department and dental school have spent four years developing the anti-microbial solution.

It contains tiny silver nanoparticles, which are applied to teeth after they have been drilled, but before they are filled.

"The idea is that it would kill any bacteria that remain on the tooth, in situation where there's dental caries or dental decay," says Dr Don Schwass.

The treatment is expected to eliminate decay in the tooth and extend the life of fillings.

Otago University has licensed the technology to an international dental company, but it will be a few years before it is in clinics.
