Ngauruhoe tremors die down

GeoNet says recent volcanic unrest at Ngauruhoe has declined to normal levels, so it's dropping the mountain's volcanic alert level back to zero.

A number of small quakes at the picturesque peak in the central North Island last month prompted geologists to raise its alert level to one, indicating minor volcanic unrest.

Levels one and two indicate different levels of unrest, whilst three, four and five indicate minor, moderate and major eruptions are happening respectively.

Since the tremors last month – which numbered as many as 67 in a single day – there have been no changes in ground temperatures and no gas has been detected exiting the summit.

The aviation colour code remains green.

Ngauruhoe's neighbours Ruapehu and Tongariro remain at alert level one, as does White Island in the Bay of Plenty.

The mountain, which stood in for Mt Doom in Sir Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy of films, last erupted in 1975.
